What's a Trigger?
A trigger happens when your nervous system perceives a threat that is happening now or one is evoked from the past. You might feel antsy, tense, irritated, nervous, shut-down or have other feelings. These are often uncomfortable and you start to feel a sense of disconnection from other people.
What is most important is to help yourself return to a sense of feeling more safe. Move away from what is making you uncomfortable, if possible. Taking time for self-care, like rest, journaling or deep breathing can be very helpful. And at times, going to others whom we trust, is most supportive, for example, getting a hug, talking or just being together.
