The Healing Power of Compassion for Trauma Heroes:
In this experiential class, you will have the opportunity to:
--Blossom in self-compassion and learn about its power to heal.
--Gain skills for feeling safer in your body and reducing triggers, using polyvagal theory.
--Understand the survival response, why it makes you crazy and how to regulate it.
--Meet other trauma heroes and establish networks of support.
--Be part of a caring learning community.
I invite you to join me for this unique class and support group for people who have experienced trauma of any kind. Traumatic stress occurs when a life event overwhelms us beyond our capacities to digest and process the experience at the time. People who live with this type of stress I call trauma heroes, because living with the vexing symptoms of unresolved trauma asks you to have more strength and stamina than you ever knew you had.
The good news is that there is hope and healing is possible.
It takes patience, community and support from skilled practitioners.
And it takes also compassion. This is the focus of the 6-week class and support group. Developing reliable and steady self-compassion and learning how to receive loving kindness is a key to lasting recovery. Where trauma causes us to feel stuck, compassion can help us to move forwards. It allows us to reach out and ask for what we need. It is also potent medicine for grief and shame, and opens the doors to other healing resources, such as courage, clarity and connection.
And what about polyvagal theory? What’s that? Polyvagal theory, strange sounding as it might be, is a ground-breaking theory developed by Stephen Porges that centers around Vagus nerve. This long nerve, starting in the brain, is sometimes called “the safety nerve” as it helps us to feel more at ease and connected to others. Like a muscle, we can strengthen or “tone” this nerve, and help ourselves to feel safer in our daily lives.
In this class, I draw from polyvagal theory and other theories to help you to understand the science of trauma and trauma healing. I will shed light on questions such as: Why is my body acting this way? Why is this so difficult? And how can I heal? My intention is to offer you hope and self-understanding. When we have this, we stop fighting ourselves and can actually partner with the wisdom of our bodies. We learn to shift out of blame and judgement, and into, yes, more compassion!
This class & support group includes:
The cost of this class is a sliding scale of $75 to $150. Limit of 10 people. Scholarships are available.
So what happens in this class? We begin each class by grounding, connecting with our hearts, and a brief check-in. A 15-minute teaching on compassion or trauma-related education follows. Next, we get to explore the lessons by doing experiential exercises, including inquiry, guided meditations, writing and art-making. We have time to share our experiences in the large group or small groups. To end, we come together in heart-centered meditation or sound healing.
This class, is participation-based and classes are not recorded. Part of the healing that happens is being in community together at the same time. I am offering an intimate and supportive environment and to achieve this goal I ask for consistent attendance of at least 4 out of 6 classes. If you need to miss a class, there will be ways to access the lesson for that class.
I also highly recommend that you have one-on-one support in place or have access to support during the course of the 6-weeks. My intention is to move gently in our class and give you time to digest experiences that arise. But with there may be occasions when emotions are triggered for you that need more processing outside of class, and I want to be sure you have this support.
My goal is to empower you with tools, experiences and information so that you can move forward on your healing journey with more confidence and skills.
This class may be a good fit for if….
You have experienced trauma (no need for a professional diagnosis).
You communicate respectfully.
You have a desire to learn powerful self-care tools.
You can attend the first class and at least 4 out of the 6 classes total.
You have the ability to name your triggers and have at least some basic tools for working with them/managing them.
You are doing counseling or healing work with a practitioner or you have access to mental health support, if needed.
This class might NOT be for you if...
